CareerCloud Radio: Background Check Q&A

Host: Chris Russell, CEO of CareerCloud

Speaker: Max Wesman, Vice President of Product at GoodHire

Podcast: http://www.careercloud.com/careercloud-radio

In a CareerCloud podcast that went live last week, Max Wesman discusses how tempting a Google search can be as a background screening method for employers. But he cautions against that approach because of the risks involved.

Running a Google search on a job candidate may violate rules and regulations laid out by the Federal Trade Commission and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. And, let's face it, a Google search doesn't take into consideration the validity of sources, intent, or context.

The EEOC also cautions employers when it comes to Google searches for screening. Google can turn up all kinds of information, including social media posts. It's difficult to validate what's shared on social media, and it's difficult to prove that you weren't influenced by what you found out there.

For example, if you find out from a Facebook post that a candidate is recently pregnant and you then decide not to hire her, you've opened yourself up to charges of discrimination. How would you prove that your knowledge of the pregnancy didn't influence your decision?

And there's another important factor that's overlooked when you rely on Google to find out about a candidate: trust. When you use an FCRA compliant employment background check service, candidates are explicitly informed of the type of search that will be run and must consent to it. This openness and transparency creates trust between the employer and the candidate.

Wesman points out that trust is a two-way street. He recommends that job seekers consider getting a personal background check that they can show to potential employers. 58% of employers have caught a lie on a resume, so when job seekers can demonstrate the truth of their resume details from a trusted source, it increases candidate credibility, transparency, and trust.

Workology: 3 Emerging HR Technologies

Host: Jessica Miller-Merrell, Founder and Chief Blogger of Blogging4Jobs

Speaker: Jonathan Duarte, Head of Partner Success for GoodHire

Podcast: http://www.blogging4jobs.com/podcast/

Jonathan Duarte is a seasoned veteran of the human resources technology industry, having founded of one of the first job boards way back in 1996. Today, Duarte works closely with small businesses and HR technology providers to integrate background screening into different Human Capital Management solutions to make hiring simpler and more transparent.

In his appearance on the Workology Podcast, Duarte explains how critical it is for companies of all sizes to run background checks and to remain transparent throughout the hiring process.

Duarte explains how GoodHire is helping small businesses establish transparency in the background screening process, and how integrating a background screening service into Human Capital Management software lowers the barrier of entry to small businesses.

Very few small businesses run background checks. Why? Because the process has been inherently difficult, and primarily paper based. Technology helps streamline the process, and make background checks more cost-effective for small businesses.

For example, with GoodHire e-consent, employers provide the candidate's email address and GoodHire sends the candidate an FCRA-compliant consent to sign digitally. The candidate is informed of the request and can read through all the fine print. The digital consent form is easy to find and manage, too.

This simplification makes it easier for small businesses to incorporate background checks during the hiring process and to establish trust with candidates.

Hiring On All Cylinders: Engineering Referrals, Assessing Recruiters

Host: Rob Stevenson, Digital Marketing Manager for Entelo

Speaker: Marielle Smith, Director of Recruiting for GoodHire and Inflection

Podcast: http://podbay.fm/show/

Marielle Smith has spent years converting business needs into talent strategies. She's always looking for new ways to hire and nurture top talent. In a podcast with Entelo, Smith discusses how job seekers can increase transparency and trust early in the recruiting process.

Recruiting a new hire is expensive, and much time on both sides is invested throughout the process. Smith has experienced cases where she's excited about hiring this candidate, then runs a background check and finds a red flag. The lack of openness on the candidate's part can be disappointing.

Smith says that having a candidate pre-verified at the beginning of the process makes a difference. It's reassuring to the recruiter, and shows that the candidate is straightforward and that the information presented is accurate. Either way, the transparency demonstrates the candidate's integrity.

Trust and transparency are core values at GoodHire, and the foundation to building great teams.
